When we told people our first stop would be Albuquerque, we got asked “Why Albuquerque” with a cocked eyebrow and bewildered look… we even got the same reaction from some of the locals. I guess there were a few good reasons that brought us here:
- When you leave from Texas, the southern most part of the country, you only have 3 directions to go. 10 hours in each direction and we could pick from Alabama, but that’s only 3 hours from Nashville and too close to home. I could see us driving back if we saw that CrossFit Nashville had a good wod that day. Kansas…I mean I like Wicked but that’s a big No Thank You! And New Mexico which, for me, offers to fulfill a few nagging desires.
- I read Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen by Christopher McDougall back in 2011 when I was in my running phase, and have since read it two more times. After that I have been completely fascinated with the Tarahumara Indians, Death Valley, and experiencing the desert. I figured heading this direction would give me a sense of it all and the opportunity to seek out what I imagined in my mind while reading the book.
- And lastly the sunsets! I grew up in Texas and always thought we had some beautiful twilight skies, but these New Mexico skies! Ohhh, they are just stunning. Every single sunset is gorgeous and I have found myself enamored and trigger happy. We get in the Surbaru and chase the sunsets looking for the best shooting location.
